In continuation of my despatch No.290 of the 14th
instant, I have the honour to transait to you herewith
a further despatch from His Majesty's Consul General
at Canton shoving the efforts which, in the absence of
foreign war vessels, the Chinese authorities are making to
maintain order in the waters of the province.
It is satisfactory to learn that in the present ab-
normal state of things Admiral Li Ho's mission has apparen
ly so far had the effect of keeping the Canton waterways
open to foreign trade, and this at a time when lawless-
ness in the province is specially rampant as a result of
the recent floods.
Be Right Honourable
I have the honour to be, with the highest respect
gir.
Your most obedient, humble servant,
Sir Edward Grey, Bart., K.G.,M.P.,
sto.. etc., etc.
(sd) J. N. Jordan
